The 8 Words of Ash – Chocolat

Lasse Hallström’s 2000 adaptation of Joanne Harris’ novel starred Juliette Binoche and cleaned up at the box office, topping it’s budget by 100 million dollars and then some. This sickly sweet story of a woman affecting peoples lives through the power of chocolate was also well received with multiple award nominations, including five Oscar nods, but more importantly, what did Ashley think?

Very sweet, melted slightly at end. Depp unnecessary.

I’ve never seen it, and admittedly I’ve oversimplified the plot, but I threw up just from reading the synopsis. I like a cheery story but frankly I’d rather watch a plane full of orphans crash than sit through something like this. Roger Ebert doesn’t agree with me though “The movie is charming and whimsical, and Binoche reigns as a serene and wise goddess.” The BBC’s Michael Thomson had this to say “If you can't be bothered running a nice warm bath, see this instead.” That review alone is enough to make me sick. If you’ll excuse me I have to go and tell some children that Santa’s not real.
